Bijagua, located in the highlands of Upala, Costa Rica, is rapidly positioning itself as an emerging luxury tourism destination with the opening of Origins Astral, a boutique hotel representing an investment exceeding $10 million.
The property offers an ultra-exclusive experience, with nightly rates ranging from approximately $2,900 to $9,000, depending on the season. The villas feature up to four bedrooms and exceed 300 square meters (3,200+ sq ft), catering to travelers seeking privacy, space, and elevated living.
This new development reflects a growing trend in Costa Rica’s mountain region: a shift toward eco-luxury tourism, personalized experiences, and high-end clientele. The area has already attracted notable visitors, including internationally recognized actress Gal Gadot.
Origins Astral is designed as a boutique hotel tailored for families and small groups, blending comfort, nature, and curated experiences. Beyond its luxury offering, the project plays a key role in the local economy, generating approximately 85 jobs, all filled by residents of the surrounding community.
Operations are closely integrated with its sister property, Origins Floral, allowing for staff rotation and operational flexibility while strengthening local expertise.
According to Claudia Silva, General Manager, the vision goes beyond hospitality:
“We are already recognized as an emerging destination by the Costa Rican Tourism Board (ICT). Now, the goal is to consolidate Bijagua at an international level.”

A core pillar of the project is its commitment to sustainability and community integration. The hotel actively collaborates with local entrepreneurs, promoting experiences and services developed by families in the region.
One example includes a butterfly farm focused on export, where visitors can observe the full lifecycle process. This approach supports a circular economy, strengthening local businesses while creating new opportunities within the destination.
Additionally, the project prioritizes responsible resource management, working alongside local water associations (ASADAS), waste management systems, and regional planning initiatives.
Despite the increasing demand, one of the main challenges for Bijagua’s growth remains air connectivity.
“Without more flights and available seats, visitor arrivals are limited—even when demand exists,” Silva noted.
Improved access to Liberia International Airport and expanded flight availability will be essential for the region to reach its full potential as a luxury destination.
As part of its offering, the hotel features El Cosmo, a signature restaurant designed to deliver a refined culinary experience with panoramic views.
The concept blends international cuisine with organic ingredients, many sourced directly from the property’s own farm.
“With El Cosmo, we open a window to the essence of Costa Rica’s natural environment,” Silva explained.
The restaurant offers views of Miravalles Volcano and the distant horizon connecting toward Lake Nicaragua. Its menu includes a variety of hot and cold dishes, artisanal pastas, meats, salads, and options for vegan and gluten-free diets.
Guests can also enjoy house-made bakery items, handcrafted desserts, signature cocktails, and natural beverages. The space accommodates up to 60 guests and features terraces, private areas, and a lounge with a fire pit. A unique interactive element allows visitors to prepare their own drinks.
Projects like Origins Astral are redefining Bijagua as a destination that seamlessly combines nature, luxury, and personalized experiences.
Silva emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards to attract a more sophisticated traveler:
“If we maintain a high standard, everyone benefits as a destination.”
Bijagua’s evolution signals a broader shift in Costa Rica’s real estate and tourism landscape. As demand for eco-luxury properties, mountain retreats, and sustainable investments continues to grow, the region is emerging as a compelling alternative to traditional coastal markets—offering exclusivity, authenticity, and long-term potential.
